Rock Candy

Girlfriends goddess Persia White is ready to rock. Estrogen-craving ladies and Elephant Man lookalikes, meet your dream woman

story Matt Barrone photography Mike Ruiz

Ever been told you bear a striking resemblance to Jabba the Hutt but have the disposition of Prince Charming?

Then Persia White wants you . . . badly. Apologies, but fellas with GQ pedigrees can save their game for 18 holes at the country club. To leave this actress-singer fiendin’, simply hit her with some mind sex and watch her temperature rise. “Looks aren’t important at all,” says the Bahamas and Miami-raised tat fiend. “Guys who are unique outside and beautiful inside make me so hot.”
One fourth of UPN’s Girlfriends, the black-Irish-Puerto Rican hybrid’s allure has helped the hit show enter its sixth season (in which the free-spirited Lynn gets an actual girlfriend—of the sex-partner variety). The fair-skinned fox’s open-mindedness extends beyond lesbian role-playing, though. Off-camera, Persia pens and pipes vocals for her industrial rock band XEO3, and has received PETA’s (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) “2005 Humanitarian of the Year” award. Such range defines her significant-other standards, too. “I’ve dated all types, from rockers to stuffed-shirt guys,” she reveals. “Sticking to one kind of man is boring. I need variety.”
That still leaves room for hip-hop heads. Act now, before one of those scary-looking Ying Yang Twins whispers in her ear.

[Long pause] Oh, sorry. So, your character on the show is sometimes referred to as a “neo-hippie.” Are you a flower child in real life?
I don’t know what that title means exactly, but I love playing Lynn because she is a lot like me. We’re both very open-minded and free-spirited, and she is unpredictable. On the show, my character is in the middle of a lesbian relationship right now, which is fun. I actually get a lot of lesbian fan mail [laughs].

Is pressing female flesh onscreen difficult for you?
The only weird part is watching the reactions of the guys on set when I’m in lesbian mode. I’m dressed scantily, and in bed with a woman, flirting and getting physical. It creates a certain atmosphere. You’ll see guys you don’t even know. “Who the hell is he?” [laughs] Like, the food delivery guy is standing behind the director, eyes wide open.

Fair enough. Is your preferred flavor of men more Method Man or Marilyn Manson?
I talk to the girls on the show about this often, because they all have specific types. Really, there is no one particular type for me. The one common denominator for men I like is that they are all creative, intelligent and artistic. It’s not about a look for me. A guy’s mindset is far more attractive. And he has to be considerate . . . .
