The 10 Worst Comic Book Movies

Want to make a nerd angry? Bring up one of these memorably bad flicks in casual conversation.

    10. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

Why’s it so bad? In what could be the final role of his career, Sean Connery joins a group of C-list actors to play a band of famous literary characters who moonlight as superheroes. Were producers surprised that teen boys weren’t excited by heroes like Dorian Gray and Captain Nemo?

Aftermath: A 16% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an underperforming $66 million domestic box office take were only half the film’s problems. If it wasn’t for this debacle Connery might still be making movies and Extraordinary Gentleman creator Alan Moore, who became even more disgusted with Hollywood after this film, might actually support the upcoming Watchmen flick.

“Howard the Duck” kicked ass. Dark Knight should be on here. Batman’s voice sounded so gay. The Joker should have been kicked in the sack for how annoying he was.

youve managed to mesh together both batman forever and batman and robin, and tim burton had nothing to do with the one that george clooney was in, he was only executive producer on the val kilmer one. and i thought they wer great movies, i loved them when i was a kid, you critics completely over look what films are made for, to entertain! and comic book movies mainly appeal to children and i loved them not everything has to be brilliant

    02.23.09 at 7:23 pm

    abbi says:
i do however agree that all the others where crap, yes fantastic four was very badly planned out… concluded too quickly

Man, you must have missed the early 90’s and earlier superhero movies. I offer Fantastic Four(1994), Captain America(1990), Doctor Strange(1978), and The Punisher(the Dolph Lundgren one)

    JA says:
dark knight tops this list - overblown, pretentious and the batman voice - omg worst thing ever

    Pytheus says:
A lot of those are recent. Like others pointed out, Captain America, Judge Dread, and the first Punisher should be on that list. And there are plenty of made for TV movies for the pickings. I liked Fantastic Four and loved the sequel with Silver Surfer. Ghost Rider was ok. The Incredible Hulk I thought was great and set that franchise in the right direction after Ang Lee’s failure. They were fun, entertaining films, not oscar winners, but weren’t horrible. Dark Knight was a good film, dunno why people feel it was that bad. I didn’t notice the growling voice problem till people pointed it out. If they remixed the audio, which they digitally altered Bale’s voice to be deeper, then things would be fine. At least this revision of Batman disguises his voice, which is more realistic.

I’m surprised nobody brought up that old ass spiderman movie, with that cat with blue eyes, horrible effects & the web was like a net. I know somebody old school remembers that! It sucks now, but it was hype as a kid. How about Creepshow? That movie was based on an old ass comic! I still watch that duck sauce horror movie every now & then. I pretty much lump the comic movies now in the same catergory of business moves. They try & squeeze some authenticity into them for the few “fans” left, but when it’s all said & done, the ploy is to generate revenue. Iron Man is the best comic movie to date, hands down. Even if a person knew nothing of Tony Stark’s legacy, it was still a hella flick. Plenty joints coming out starting this year, but they have a lot of space to fill in IM’s shoes. I’m really looking forward to Avengers. I heard Ant-Man has a movie in the works (ugh!!), but we’ll see what it do.

I agree with JV. ‘Unbreakable’ was about the worst movie ever - comic book or no. Talk about let down. It was like 90 minutes of waiting for something (anything) to happen. And it never did.

hahah us nerds don’t get angry when you mention these movies although they are a little sad to behold. Now, say that Dark Knight is a load of rubbish and people really do get upset. I think that Dark Knight is a load of rubbish, btw.

The writer of this article is a complete and utter idiot. The second Hulk film received MOSTLY positive reviews…not mixed…AND was considered a success(it garnered more revenue than the first film) but not as much as Marvel hoped. Do your homework.
