Once our sole reason to watch Rap City, Melyssa Ford left the world of music videos behind in early 2004. More ambitious than your typical wet-dream machine, she’s the benchmark for every skin-flashing video honey, thanks in part to her transition into television.
Well, one person’s benchmark is another’s bummer. Male boob-tube fiends have reluctantly settled for an “elegant” Melyssa, mentally stripping down the evening gowns she wore while hosting BET Style and working the red carpet for ESPN’s ESPY Awards. But wait, it gets worse. Nowadays, the closest this Canadian-born beauty gets to television is meetings with the Ari Golds of Hollywood.

Melyssa Ford I’m honored and humbled to be asked to be a part of such a landmark for you guys. KING sets the standard for what the urban male wants and desires. I was looking forward to being on KING’s cover more, both times, than being in Maxim, and that’s huge.
We don’t mention the M word around these parts. To make up for it, more praise is in order. Continue to document our excellence.
From top to bottom, the stories that are incorporated within the magazine [have range]; it’s not just about hot chicks with fat asses and pretty faces. I remember that piece on Calvin Darden in the issue with Free on the cover. That issue is number one for a reason. Sure, it had Free being Free and she looked good, but it also showed you really understand the diversity of your readers.
Thanks. You’re a gentlewoman and a scholar. The first time you were in the magazine you were right in the midst of a breaking point in your career. What was going on at the time?
I decided to become a brand and step behind the camera as well and take control of my destiny. I was like, “Fuck magazines and other calendars profiting off my image. I can do this shit myself.” So the idea was born. I decided that I’m gonna make some real money off this, ’cause I don’t wanna go back to Canada.

I think that, for the most part, what has made Ms. Ford last in the business for as long as she has is that she seems obtainable for the average male (even though in reality, she is probably not). In the business, fantasy is the product, and every man’s fantasy is to “date” (for the sake of being politically correct) a video vixen. It’s up to the video vixen to give that impression to her male fans that she is approachable regardless of his financial status. In other words, it is her responsibility to give the impression that she is “down to earth”. Of course, Ms. Ford, and every other video vixen like her will choose a baller over Joe Average any day of the week, and Joe Average knows it, but it at least makes us feel good to believe that she would give us the chance if we were ever confident enough to approach her for a “date”. That’s the business, and she has learned to do her business well. (However, I still think that she doesn’t know what she’s talking about in her columns/articles/blogs half the time…lol).
